HANS OTTO


Hans Otto is a versatile Berlin based  jazz, rock and pop drummer, improviser, teacher and songwriter. Born and raised in East Berlin in 1986, Hans studied music in Weimar, Leipzig and Jerusalem. As a scholarship holder of the Deutschlandstipendium, Hans completed his bachelor's degree with summa cum laude in 2017 and completed his music studies in Leipzig as a master of music with an artistic and educational orientation. He has been teaching at state music schools since 2013. Hans is currently a teacher at the Friedrichshain-Köpenick and Treptow-Köpenick music schools in Berlin.

 He has worked with musicians such as Alexander von Schlippenbach, Michael Blake, Joel Holmes, Conny Bauer, Christian Kögel, Richie Beirach, Detlef Beyer, Marc Muellbauer, Werner Neumann, Johnnes Enders, Felix Wahnschaffe, Albert Beger, and others. and his projects were already in the pre-program for Billy Hart, Birth Control, Frank Zappa's 'Banned from Utopia' and others. In the summer of 2022, Hans was a scholarship holder of an artist residency in the artists' town of Kalbe. He is currently dedicating himself to the MOVA project with the deaf dancer Kassandra Wedel, performance art between dance and music, which has been shown as a documentary film at international film festivals. He was recently able to play film music for current projects for the Babelsberg Film University and for the arte broadcaster. Also recently in 2023 Kaiser New World got nominated by Deutscher Schallplattenkritik for best album in world music.

 

Hans is a member of the German Jazz Union and was involved in the Konzertkollektiv CityWest, which organizes concerts and sessions itself. With permanent line-ups such as the Hans Otto Piano Trio, Kaisers New World, Christian Kögel, 'kid the moon', AuditiverWahnsinn and Joel Holmes Expansion, he devotes himself to jazz and free improvisation, as well as to modern pop music with SOPHE.

 
 

Hans Otto ist ein vielseitiger Berliner Jazz, Rock und Pop Schlagzeuger, Impromusiker, Lehrer und Songschreiber. 1986 in Ost-Berlin geboren und aufgewachsen, studierte Hans Musik in Weimar, Leipzig und Jerusalem. Als Stipendiat des Deutschlandstipendiums absolvierte Hans 2017 das Bachelorstudium mit summa cum laude und beendete sein Musikstudium in Leipzig als Master of Musik mit künstlerischer und pädagogischer Ausrichtung. Seit 2013 unterrichtet er an staatlichen Musikschulen. Aktuell ist Hans Lehrer in den Musikschulen Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg  und Treptow-Köpenick in Berlin.

Er arbeitete bisher mit Musikern wie Alexander von Schlippenbach, Michael Blake, Joel Holmes, Conny Bauer, Christian Kögel, Richie Beirach, Detlef Beyer, Marc Muellbauer, Werner Neumann, Johnnes Enders, Felix Wahnschaffe, Albert Beger, u.A. und stand mit seinen Projekten schon im Vorprogramm von Billy Hart, Birth Control, Frank Zappas ‚Banned from Utopia‘ u.A.. Im Sommer 2022 war Hans Stipendiat einer Artist Residency der Künstlerstadt Kalbe. Aktuell widmet er sich im Projekt MOVA mit der gehörlosen Tänzerin Kassandra Wedel der Performancekunst zwischen Tanz und Musik, das als Dokumentarfilm auf internationalen Filmfestivals gezeigt wurde. Bei aktuellen Projekten der Filmuniversität Babelsberg sowie für den Sender arte konnte er zuletzt Filmmusik miteinspielen. Ebenfalls im Jahr 2023 wurde das Project Kaiser New World von der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik für das beste Album der Weltmusik nominiert.

Hans ist Mitglied der Deutschen Jazzunion und engagiert sich im Konzertkollektiv CityWest, das selbst Konzerte und Sessions organisiert. Mit festen Besetzungen, wie dem Hans Otto Piano Trio, Kögel/Sadeh/Otto, ‘kid the moon’, AuditiverWahnsinn sowie Paul Lapp Forum widmet er sich dem Jazz und der freien Improvisation, sowie mit SOPHE der modernen Popmusik.
